Successfully solving reality-based tasks requires both mathematical and text comprehension skills. Previous research has shown that mathematical tasks requiring language proficiency have lower solution rates than those that do not, indicating increased difficulty through textual input. Therefore, it is plausible to assume that a lack of text comprehension skills leads to performance problems. Given that different sociodemographic characteristics and cognitive factors can influence task performance, this study aims to determine whether text comprehension mediates the relationship between these factors and competence in solving reality-based tasks. Additionally, it examines the impact of systematic linguistic variation in texts. Using an experimental design, 428 students completed three reality-based tasks (word count: M = 212.4, SD = 19.7) with different linguistic complexities as part of a paper-pencil test. First, students answered questions about the situation-related text comprehension of each text, followed by a mathematical question to measure their competence in solving reality-based tasks. The results indicate that: a) Tasks with texts of lower linguistic complexity have a significantly higher solution rate for both text comprehension (d = 0.189) and mathematical tasks (d = 0.119). b) Cognitive factors are significant predictors of mathematical solutions. c) Text comprehension mediates the relationship between the impact of students’ cultural resources and cognitive factors and their competence to solve reality-based tasks. These findings highlight the importance of linguistic complexity for mathematical outcomes and underscore the need to reinforce text comprehension practice in mathematical education owing to its mediating role.

This study aimed to optimize critical thinking by empowering reflective and impulsive students' collaboration, communication, and information literacy skills through information literacy-oriented e-books in STEM-integrated problem-based learning (PBL). The research method used was a descriptive explorative approach. The study subjects consisted of five reflective students and five impulsive students. The measurement of cognitive style used the Matching Familiar Figure Test (MFFT) instrument. Collaboration skills were assessed through observation sheets, critical thinking and communication skills were assessed through student worksheets based on problem-solving tasks, and information literacy was assessed through a questionnaire. The study found that reflective students excelled in critical thinking and information literacy, while impulsive students demonstrated superior collaboration skills. As for communication skills, reflective and impulsive students have different advantages for each indicator of communication skills. This study can conclude that implementing information literacy-oriented e-books through STEM-integrated PBL can optimize reflective and impulsive students' critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and information literacy skills. The implication of this study is the importance of integrating 21st century skills holistically in learning practices, especially in the digital era, to prepare the younger generation to face the challenges of the 21st century.

The education of gifted students is often characterized by high expectations, ambitious goals, and significant effort invested in learning. Their experiences of success and failure are shaped by a variety of factors, including personal, family, school, cultural, and social influences. This article examines how gifted students perceive and experience their own successes and failures, as well as how these experiences are perceived and responded to by their peers. Using qualitative methods, the study involved semi-structured interviews with thirty gifted students from seventh to ninth grades across ten elementary schools in Slovenia. The findings indicate that gifted students experience a range of emotions in response to success, from satisfaction to anxiety, while their reactions to failure often involve frustration and self-criticism. Peer responses to their success and failure vary significantly, ranging from supportive encouragement to jealousy and social exclusion. These findings highlight the complex interpersonal dynamics at play within school environments. Understanding and addressing these dynamics is crucial for creating inclusive, supportive, and stimulating learning environments that nurture both the academic and social-emotional well-being of gifted students.

This study examines the factors influencing English language achievement among non-English major undergraduate students in Thailand, with a specific focus on the differences between high-achieving and low-achieving learners. Conducted at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna, this research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews. Three primary influencing factors were identified: student-related factors (e.g., motivation and self-regulated learning), teacher-related factors (e.g., pedagogical practices and teacher-student interactions), and environmental factors (e.g., availability of learning resources). Student motivation and self-regulation emerged as the strongest predictors of success, while teacher-related factors unexpectedly showed a negative influence, suggesting a misalignment between teaching strategies and student needs. Environmental factors, though positively perceived, had a less direct impact on outcomes. Practical implications include enhancing intrinsic motivation, adopting tailored teaching strategies to meet diverse learner needs, and strengthening teacher-student relationships to support low-achieving students. Policymakers are encouraged to address resource disparities and develop targeted interventions to enhance English language proficiency among students.

This study addresses global concerns surrounding elementary students' science performance following the COVID-19, as a result of international tests such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) highlight the ongoing challenges that urge the exploration of innovative educational approaches to improve science learning. This research employed gamification-assisted instruction and explored its impact on enhancing the understanding of science concepts and attitudes toward science class among fourth graders. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design and included an experimental group (ExG) that was taught using a gamification strategy and a control group (CoG) that was taught using a traditional method with a sample of 38 female elementary students from a public school in Jordan. Data were gathered using valid and reliable tools: the developed scientific concepts test and the Attitude Towards Science class measures. The ANCOVA analysis revealed that gamification significantly improves the acquisition of scientific concepts (η2=.208) and boosts a positive attitude toward science classes among elementary students (η2=.626). These findings encourage decision-makers to incorporate gamification into science teaching practices and methods.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in social communication and repetitive behaviors. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) has been widely utilized to support communication in children with ASD by using picture cards to convey needs and responses. However, traditional PECS can be limited by its static nature and lack of immediate feedback. Recent technological advances, particularly Augmented Reality (AR), offer new avenues for enhancing these communication strategies. This study explores the integration of AR into PECS and its impact on improving basic communication skills, specifically answering questions and commenting, in children with ASD. The research involved a multiple baseline design with four participants aged 7-12 years, recruited from autism centers in Melaka, Malaysia. Results showed significant improvements in both the frequency and accuracy of responses and relevant commenting skills after the AR-based intervention. Answering skills improved by 83%, and commenting skills increased by 122%, with the average number of relevant comments rising from 3 (SD = 0.89) to 6.67 (SD = 2.25). Statistical analysis (paired t-test) revealed a significant effect (p = 0.00272). Compared to traditional methods, AR-based PECS accelerated the achievement of target communication skills. Future research should focus on larger sample sizes and explore long-term impacts to solidify these promising outcomes.

It specifically seeks to analyze the current literature to identify how AI could be utilized in English language classrooms, the specific tools and pedagogical approaches employed, and the challenges faced by educators. Using the PRISMA-guided Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, articles were selected from Scopus, Science Direct, and ERIC, and then analyzed thematically with NVivo software. Findings reveal that AI enhances English teaching through tools like grammar checkers, chatbots, and language learning apps, with writing assistance being the most common application (54.55% of studies). Despite its benefits, challenges such as academic dishonesty, over-reliance on AI (27.27% of studies), linguistic issues, and technical problems remain significant. The study emphasizes the need for ethical considerations and teacher training to maximize AI’s potential. It also highlights societal concerns, including the digital divide, underscoring the importance of equitable access to AI-powered education for learners of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of cooperative learning models in improving critical reading skills. This study uses a meta-analysis study method by analyzing 28 articles extracted from the databases of Scopus, Google Scholar, EBSCO, EmeraldInsight, Science & Direct, SpringerLink, Taylor & Francis, and ProQuest. The meta-analysis allows researchers to combine the results of previous research, providing a more comprehensive picture of how effective a particular approach is in teaching critical reading. The research findings show that cooperative learning models significantly improve essential skills of reading more effectively than traditional ones. This is shown by the effect sizes based on the fixed model, showing the overall standard difference in the mean is 0.784 (95% CI, 0.689 to 0.880) with p-values = 0.00 (<0.05). Using a cooperative learning model, The measure showed positive effect sizes on critical reading learning. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the cooperative learning model effectively improves essential reading skills. However, several factors, such as the quality of the facilitators and the teaching methods, influence the results. The implications of this study show the need for a broader application of cooperative learning models to improve critical reading skills in schools and other educational institutions, with adjustments to the needs and characteristics of students.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the global educational landscape, prompting a need to explore emerging literature on home learning, literacy development, and parental involvement. This study aims to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4: Quality Education, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by examining these aspects in the context of the pandemic and beyond through a bibliometric analysis. The analysis depicts 416 publications from the Web of Science Database between 2014–2023. The study utilized co-citation and co-word analysis techniques to identify key research clusters and trends related to home learning and literacy development. The analysis revealed that parental involvement can help mitigate learning loss, supporting SDG targets for equitable and inclusive education. Key research clusters identified include the influence of socio-economic status on literacy outcomes, continuity of literacy practices, and the long-term effects of traditional versus digital home learning environments. The findings highlighted a consensus on the importance of a supportive home literacy environment for reading skills and overall academic success. The need for intervention programs targeting low-income groups to ensure equitable access to learning resources, aligning with SDG 10, was also identified through the study. The findings have practical implications for enhancing the home literacy environment, increasing parental involvement, and supporting early literacy interventions, providing valuable insights for education stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers in the post-pandemic era.

Despite extensive research on automated writing evaluation systems, no empirical investigation has been reported so far on GenAI’s potential in cultivating intermedial writing skills within first language contexts. The present study explored the impact of ChatGPT as a writing assistant on university literature students’ intermedial writing proficiency. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group, researchers examined 52 undergraduate students’ essay writings over a 12-week intervention. Participants in the treatment group harnessed the conversational agent for iterative essay refinement, while the reference group followed traditional writing processes. Utilizing a comprehensive four-dimensional assessment rubric, researchers analyzed essays in terms of relevance, integration, specificity, and balance of intermedial references. Quantitative analyses revealed significant improvements in the AI-assisted group, particularly in relevance and insight facets. This study investigates how undergraduate art majors at the National University of Art Education in Vietnam perceive the cultural integration into their English curriculum. A quantitative design was employed using a researcher-developed questionnaire administered to 214 students. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, and multiple regression. Findings indicated that students valued culturally relevant content, particularly materials connected to both Vietnamese and international art as well as experiential and student-centered instructional strategies. Reported challenges included limited cultural background knowledge, cognitive overload, and reduced confidence when discussing culture in English. Crucially, results from multiple regression revealed that how culture is taught may have a greater impact on students’ experiences than the content itself. Therefore, these findings underscore the importance of aligning instructional approaches with learners’ disciplinary identities and offer implications for culturally responsive curriculum design, professional development, and the implementation of context-specific teaching strategies in English language instruction for art students.

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric and content analysis of research on autism and mathematics learning from 2010 to 2024. A total of 131 peer-reviewed articles were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database using keywords such as autism, mathematics, learning, and intervention. Bibliometric analysis was conducted to quantitatively examine publication trends, leading authors, contributing countries, and co-authorship networks, offering a macroscopic overview of the field’s evolution. Visualisations generated using VOSviewer further illustrated keyword co-occurrence and thematic clustering. Complementing this, content analysis provided a qualitative synthesis of research themes and conceptual progressions across the literature. The findings revealed a clear thematic evolution. Early research (2010–2015) predominantly focused on behavioural interventions, structured instructional approaches, and basic numeracy development. Mid-phase studies (2016–2020) introduced inclusive pedagogies, social-emotional considerations, and differentiated instruction. Recent research (2021–2024) has shifted towards personalised, technology-enhanced instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and the integration of digital tools in mathematics education. Despite this growth, several gaps remain. Research remains limited in addressing cross-cultural diversity, long-term evaluations of digital interventions, and the adaptation of pedagogies in underrepresented regions. This study emphasises the need for future research to explore culturally responsive frameworks, the sustainability of technology uses, and equity in mathematics education for autistic learners.

Children today encounter English in various contexts, with cartoons serving as a particularly influential medium. Beyond their entertainment value, cartoons also promote incidental foreign language acquisition. This article presents the findings of a study involving 240 sixth-grade pupils from Slovenian primary schools. Employing a quantitative approach, the study utilised both a questionnaire and a knowledge test to explore the relationship between English cartoon viewing and incidental vocabulary acquisition. It examined the frequency of cartoon viewing, pupils’ attitudes towards English-language cartoons, and the impact of subtitles on vocabulary test performance. The results indicate that a higher frequency of cartoon viewing, positive attitudes towards English cartoons, and the use of English subtitles are significantly associated with enhanced English vocabulary knowledge. The findings underscore the educational value of English cartoons in supporting vocabulary development and highlight the potential of engaging multimedia content in fostering incidental vocabulary acquisition in both classroom settings and out-of-school contexts. Consequently, educators should incorporate cartoon-based materials to enhance vocabulary learning, introduce authentic language exposure, and provide multi-sensory experiences tailored to varying learner preferences and proficiency levels.

This study examined the impact of reading journals on the development of English as a foreign language (EFL) reading comprehension and engagement, while also analyzing participants' perceptions of the learning process. A mixed-method design was applied to a sample of 80 second-year senior high school students (aged 15–18) with A2 proficiency. Using a quasi-experimental approach, participants were divided into an experimental group that kept journals and a control group that followed traditional instruction. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, student questionnaires, and thematic analysis of the journals. Results showed significant improvements in reading performance among students in the experimental group. Students also reported better vocabulary retention, improved ability to identify main ideas, and greater confidence. Reflections revealed increased engagement, critical thinking, and autonomy. However, learners faced challenges such as complex grammar, summarization, and time constraints. Overall, the findings suggest that reading journals can be an effective strategy to support EFL reading comprehension and foster deeper interaction with texts.

This systematic review synthesizes research on the application of Augmented Reality (AR) technology in K–12 special education to evaluate its impact on learning outcomes and identify implementation trends, benefits, and challenges. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, a search of the Scopus, IEEE, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases on 20 March 2024 for English-language peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2024 yielded 16 studies that met the inclusion criteria. The analysis of these studies reveals a growing research interest, particularly after 2019, with a concentration of research in developing nations like Indonesia and Malaysia. The findings consistently show that AR technology interventions, predominantly targeting students with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through 3D objects and game-based applications, positively impact academic achievement, motivation, and skill development. Despite these promising outcomes, this review concludes that a significant gap remains between the technology's potential and its current practice, hindered by challenges such as high costs, technical complexity, and a narrow research focus. Therefore, future work should prioritize developing cost-effective, user-friendly AR technology and expanding research to include a wider range of disabilities and educational contexts to ensure equitable and effective access for all students.

This bibliometric analysis examines global trends and scholarly discussions on learning poverty, with a focus on numeracy and literacy skills among young learners over the past decade (2015-2023). All data is retrieved from the Scopus database, and quantitative methods were employed to evaluate the impact and influence of literature in this area. In conducting the bibliometric analysis, the study utilised Microsoft Excel for descriptive statistics, Harzing’s Publish or Perish for citation metrics, and VOSviewer to visualize networks related to the co-occurrence of keywords and co-word analysis. The analysis findings indicate a substantial increase in research output on learning poverty, particularly after 2020, driven by the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The key themes identified in the literature include the expansion of educational inequalities, the impact of the digital divide, and the role of educational technologies in addressing learning losses. Co-occurrence and co-word analyses reveal a strong focus on COVID-19, educational inequality, and the integration of advanced learning technologies in recent research. These findings underscore the critical importance of targeted interventions and equity-focused policies to combat learning poverty. The analysis also emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background, acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills. Furthermore, the study emphasises the need for resilient and adaptable educational systems to better prepare for future challenges, particularly in the face of global crises such as pandemics. Essentially, the conclusions discuss the sustained efforts to address educational disparities and promote equitable learning opportunities for all.

This preliminary study examines how three generative AI tools, ChatGPT-4, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, support B+ level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in opinion essay writing. Conducted at a preparatory school in Türkiye, the study explored student use of the tools for brainstorming, outlining, and feedback across three essay tasks. A mixed methods design combined rubric-based evaluations, surveys, and reflections. Quantitative results showed no significant differences between tools for most criteria, indicating comparable performance in idea generation, essay structuring, and feedback. The only significant effect was in the feedback stage, where ChatGPT-4 scored higher than both Gemini and Copilot for actionability. In the brainstorming stage, a difference in argument relevance was observed across tools, but this was not statistically significant after post-hoc analysis. Qualitative findings revealed task-specific preferences: Gemini was favored for clarity and variety in brainstorming and outlining, ChatGPT-4 for detailed, clear, and actionable feedback, and Copilot for certain organizational strengths. While the tools performed similarly overall, perceptions varied by task and tool, highlighting the value of allowing flexible tool choice in EFL writing instruction.

This article aims to establish a research map of the flipped classroom (FC) model in general education for the period 2014-2024, exploring publication trends, influential authors, organizations, countries, and prominent research topics, while also identifying academic gaps in this field. The study focuses on three main aspects: (1) publication trends and influential authors, organizations, and countries; (2) key research topics and academic gaps; (3) international collaboration networks in FC research. The research employs a bibliometric analysis method, utilizing the Scopus database and the VOSviewer visualization tool, to synthesize information and identify research trends. The results indicate that research on FC in K-12 education increased sharply from 2019, reflecting the impact of digital transformation in education during and after Covid-19. The United States, Hong Kong, and Taiwan are the leading research centers. Authors such as Bergmann, Bishop, and Hew have been highly influential. Prominent research trends include self-regulated learning, learner satisfaction, gamification, and the application of artificial intelligence. The international collaboration network in this field is growing, with strong participation from institutions from Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. The study recommends expanding the scope of analysis beyond Scopus and using qualitative methods and systematic reviews to further evaluate the FC model. The research will provide policymakers, teachers, and researchers with useful evidence for improving programs, enhancing professional development, and promoting digital transformation in general education.
Exploring the Role of the Frequency of Housework in Students' Academic Development: A Longitudinal Study from Hungary

Our study examines the link between adolescents’ skills (mathematics, reading literacy, and physical fitness) and the frequency with which they participate in housework. We utilize a large longitudinal dataset of Hungarian adolescents (N = 37,461), making this, to our knowledge, the first European study on this topic. We use a rich set of background variables and fixed effects estimators to account for time-varying and time-invariant individual characteristics. Contrary to most of the literature we find cognitive skills to have no practically significant relationship with housework frequency. This discrepancy can be attributed to methodological choices (i.e., the use of the fixed effects estimator) or sociocultural differences in housework duties between the regions studied. Investigating heterogeneous effects on cognitive skills, we find girls’ literacy scores to be slightly affected by daily housework (-.02 SD), unlike boys’. The difference is more pronounced for children with highly educated parents and working mothers (-.06 SD). Substantially lower mathematics scores are detected for children who almost never participate in housework and have unemployed mothers (-.19 SD). Children who have chores to do almost every day and whose mothers are on parental leave also show signs of worsened mathematics ability (-.1 SD). Fitness levels of students who rarely engage in housework are significantly lower (-.04 SD), suggesting that some participation in household tasks contributes to physical well-being. This effect is pronounced for children of tertiary-educated parents (-.05 SD). Overall, findings suggest that household chores are cognitively neutral for most adolescents, have small physical-fitness benefits when performed in moderation, and become academically detrimental only at the extremes within specific family contexts.
