The Mediated Impacts of Psychological Capital on Student Burnout through Academic Engagement and Learner Empowerment: A Serial Mediation Model

Psychological capital (PsyCap) emerges as a pivotal asset for mitigating student burnout in college settings, as it bolsters their learning empowerment and engagement. However, there have been inadequate empirical studies investigating the significance of these resources in promoting engagement and empowerment, ultimately leading to a reduction in students’ burnout within the context of higher education. To bridge this gap, we examined the extent to which PsyCap predicts student burnout through its impacts on academic engagement and learner empowerment. The sample of the study was college students (N = 562) who completed a battery of self-report questionnaires measuring their PsyCap, academic engagement, learner empowerment, and student burnout. We employed hierarchical multiple regression analyses and PROCESS macro to ascertain prediction and serial mediation effects. The results substantiated the hypotheses that PsyCap positively related to learner empowerment and academic engagement while negatively associated with student burnout. Further, students with higher levels of learner empowerment and engagement reported lower levels of burnout in their academic studies. The mediational results also revealed that engagement and learner empowerment acted as significant serial mediators between PsyCap and student burnout. The study’s findings underscore the critical significance of PsyCap within higher education, particularly in nurturing learner empowerment, and engagement, thereby reducing student burnout.

This study examines how work well-being is addressed in Finnish leadership education programs. The data consist of 91 publicly available course descriptions from Finnish leadership education programs in 2023, including those for master’s degrees from universities of applied sciences, traditional university-level leadership programs, and specialist vocational qualifications in leadership and business management. The study uses content analysis to examine the role of work well-being in leadership training. The results indicate that work well-being is often linked to organizational performance and treated as a tool for achieving economic goals, with less emphasis on the inherent value of employee well-being. This instrumental approach is prevalent across the different types of leadership training programs, including those found in the universities of applied sciences, traditional universities, and programs for specialist vocational qualifications in leadership and business management. The study also finds that leadership training programs often emphasize self-leadership and personal development, which can perpetuate a culture of individual responsibility for well-being and may lead to superficial leadership practices. The study concludes that Finnish leadership educators should prioritize holistic approaches to work well-being in leadership training, emphasizing its intrinsic value alongside its role in organizational performance, while researchers could explore methods to integrate and evaluate these balanced perspectives in diverse educational contexts.

This article deals with the European Union's educational policies during the Covid-19 pandemic when several cracks and vulnerabilities in its Member States' education systems were exposed across the European Union (EU). In this sense, and with this exceptional period as a reference, we propose to research whether the Community's educational policies reflect a reinforcement of the commitment to education as one of the pillars of European integration. Other studies have not yet addressed the possible impact of this exceptional period on the design of European educational policies as integration mechanisms. Namely, whether there would be a pause in the integration process or, on the contrary, its strengthening and, if so, in what respect. For this research objective, several documents from the most important European institutions were examined. Its results allow us to verify the intention to renew education as an essential element of European integration and as an instrument to promote the EU as an economically stable and socially integrated community.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the global educational landscape, prompting a need to explore emerging literature on home learning, literacy development, and parental involvement. This study aims to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4: Quality Education, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by examining these aspects in the context of the pandemic and beyond through a bibliometric analysis. The analysis depicts 416 publications from the Web of Science Database between 2014–2023. The study utilized co-citation and co-word analysis techniques to identify key research clusters and trends related to home learning and literacy development. The analysis revealed that parental involvement can help mitigate learning loss, supporting SDG targets for equitable and inclusive education. Key research clusters identified include the influence of socio-economic status on literacy outcomes, continuity of literacy practices, and the long-term effects of traditional versus digital home learning environments. The findings highlighted a consensus on the importance of a supportive home literacy environment for reading skills and overall academic success. The need for intervention programs targeting low-income groups to ensure equitable access to learning resources, aligning with SDG 10, was also identified through the study. The findings have practical implications for enhancing the home literacy environment, increasing parental involvement, and supporting early literacy interventions, providing valuable insights for education stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers in the post-pandemic era.

Teachers' professional performance is strongly influenced by their psychological well-being, their ability to adapt to unstable and uncertain situations (especially in wartime), and their capacity to use effective strategies to manage and overcome stress. This study explored the relationships between teachers' psychological well-being, coping strategies, and intolerance of uncertainty. The Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being (PWB Scale), The Mental Health Continuum–Short Form (MHC-SF), The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale–Short Form (IUS-12), Brief COPE Inventory (Brief COPE) were administered with a sample of 1936 teachers of primary and secondary school from Poland (n=927) and Ukraine (n=1009). The results showed that the psychological well-being of Polish and Ukrainian teachers is positively correlated with problem-focused coping (in particular, with active coping, positive reframing, planning, and use of instrumental support) and emotion-focused coping (such as the use of emotional support, humor, acceptance, and religion). A negative correlation was found between teachers' psychological well-being and avoidant coping (such as denial, substance use, behavioral disengagement) and intolerance of uncertainty (prospective anxiety, inhibitory anxiety). A multiple regression analysis was used to identify statistically significant predictors of psychological well-being for teachers in Poland and Ukraine. As a result, both common and distinct factors that influence teachers' psychological well-being were identified, considering the socio-cultural differences that arise from the unique characteristics of the education systems in each country and the sensitivity of teachers' well-being to various socio-political changes. The findings can be used in developing programs that support teachers' psychological well-being and create conditions conducive to enhancing their professional functioning.

The global context of digital transformation has compelled education systems to rapidly adapt and innovate. In Vietnam, establishing an effective digital education ecosystem is key to achieving sustainable development goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on Quality Education. However, there is a recognized lack of quantitative research on the key drivers shaping this ecosystem in the Vietnamese context. This study aims to explore and identify these main drivers. Drawing on survey data from 699 Vietnamese students and applying Exploratory Factor Analysis, we identified four prominent factors: Technological Infrastructure, Stakeholder Collaboration, Policy Orientation, and Financial Accessibility. The findings suggest these factors play a foundational role in fostering the digital transformation of higher education. These results provide preliminary empirical evidence on the underlying structures that shape Vietnam's digital education environment. This research can serve as a basis for future in-depth analyses and offers initial insights for policymakers to focus on the identified crucial factors.
